For any activity that needs a permit, always check with your school international office and immigration before you start.

Residence & VisaInt'l Students

D-2 / D-4 visas

Degree programs use D-2; university-affiliated language training uses D-4. You can apply to extend your stay from 4 months before expiry, and your graduation date may differ from your period of stay.

Health insurance for students

For D-2, coverage is mandatory from your foreigner-registration date; for language trainees (D-4-1/D-4-7) and visiting students (D-2-8), from 6 months after entry. If you qualify, you may get a 50% premium reduction.

University dormitories

Handong runs RC residence halls; Sunlin has Changjo and Jilli halls; Pohang University offers 1-2 person rooms; POSTECH has its own dormitories. Fees, assignment criteria, and required documents vary by term and student type.

Part-time work permit

You must get a permit before doing any part-time work. You may work at up to 2 workplaces at once, and any change of workplace or work location requires a new permit.

To job-hunt after graduating, switch to D-10-1 - up to 1 year at a time and 3 years total. Before formal employment, you must change again to a work visa that matches your job type.

Allowed work hours (POSTECH example)

  • If you meet the Korean-proficiency standard - up to 30 hours on weekdays
  • If you do not meet the standard - up to 15 hours on weekdays
  • Allowed hours on weekends and during vacations depend on your degree program and personal circumstances

Transit by university

  • Handong - bus 302 from Pohang Station; taxi about 20-25 min
  • POSTECH - bus 5000 from Pohang Station, then transfer to 207 at the Intercity Bus Terminal
  • Sunlin - buses 120/121/308/5000 from Pohang Station; taxi about 5 min
  • Pohang University - buses 206/207 from Pohang Station or the Intercity Bus Terminal
  • There is no direct route from Pohang Gyeongju Airport to the campuses (transfer via bus 900, or take a taxi)

Be careful in these cases

  • You started a part-time job before getting a permit
  • You work at an unpermitted workplace or exceed your permitted hours
  • You work in a restricted field such as delivery, designated driving, or entertainment venues
  • Your attendance or grades are very low (your stay extension may be restricted)
  • You moved from a dormitory to a studio and did not report the change of residence
